THE VIDEOKID – Back To The 80’s

I recently did a Launch Post for THE VIDEOKID when it released on steam, on January 31st. It took me a couple weeks to finally get to try it out. So here is a quick game-play video and 80’s throwback review.

THE VIDEOKID is a challenging arcade style skate game that pays tribute to the 80’s. Its packed full of nostalgic references and iconic characters retro fans will love.

On the surface this game looks very much like PaperBoy on a skateboard, and it very much is. Its just a bit more of a faster pace with arcade style game-play.

If your an 80’s retro fan, this game probably grabbed your interest right away. PaperBoy on a skateboard that looks like Marty Mcfly. Its a must try. So lets go over some of the finer points of the game.

Its rare that I play a PC game with my keyboard. The 4 button control layout is so simple I found it pretty easy to get the game down. After about 5 runs I adjusted.

In my game-play video I only featured one quick run to illustrate how fast the arcade style rounds are. The game-play is fast, intense, and doesn’t usually last very long.

The cameos and references are what makes this game great. This game does a terrific job of paying tribute to the 1980’s. There are so many references and cameos I can’t even begin to name them all. They come at you about a reference every other second.

The music is great as you’d expect, but the sound effects can get annoying after you’ve played the game for a while.

As you get points and do tricks sometimes it tells you right in the middle of the screen. This can sometimes hinder your vision, and cause you to wipe out. When one fall means having to start over it gets annoying.

So my problem with arcade style games are that they tend to get repetitive fast. I believe the runs are procedure generated. With so much going on, things start to repeat after a few rounds.

Overall I thought this game was awesome. It does get repetitive pretty fast, but its a lot of fun for a little while. Though you probably won’t play this game for 8 hours a day, I think it does have replay value.

On Steam THE VIDEOKID only has a Positive User Review. I’m going to disagree, and rate it as Very Positive. If your a 80’s fan I’m going to highly recommend you invest in this game. Its very cheap and well worth the price in my opinion.
