The Philadelphia 76ers Purchase 2 Major eSports Teams

The Philadelphia 76ers had one of the most brutal seasons in NBA history, going 10 and 72 last season. Though I’m not a fan, I grew up attending most of the live NBA games I’ve ever attended in Philly. So in a way I have a soft spot in my heart for all sports teams representing Philadelphia.

Though the 76ers had a horrible season, that doesn’t stop them from thinking outside of the box. Today Kotaku reported that the Philadelphia 76ers just purchased the controlling stakes of 2 established eSports teams. This purchase makes the 76ers the first traditional sports team to own any official eSports team.

The 2 teams purchased are Team Dignitas, and Team Apex. Team Dignitas is an eSports powerhouse that was founded in 2004. Team Apex are rock stars of the League of Legends universe. both teams will be joining forces under the Team Dignitas name. The 76ers will be handling daily management, sales, merchandising, marketing, branding and publicity. Manager Greg Richardson of Team Dignitas will serve as chairman of the combined team.

This is a very interesting move for the 76ers. I can’t wait to see how it plays out. Hopefully Team Dignitas does a little better then the NBA team this year. How will this effect eSports? Will we be seeing more main stream sports teams investing in eSports? Please let us know your thoughts and predictions in the comment section below.
