Yooka-Laylee Gets Shovel Knight, Physical Release

Shovel Knight, the yard-tool wielding hero, is making his way to Playtonic Games’ Yooka-Laylee. Playtonic Games announced the guest appearance in their latest trailer. Released at EGX 2016, the trailer introduces the supporting cast of Yooka-Laylee along with a 3D Shovel Knight.

Playtonic Games posted to their blog to celebrate the collaboration with Yacht Club Games. Playtonic Games founder and Project Director of Yooka-Laylee, Chris Sutherland states, “We’ve always been fans of Shovel Knight and thought it’d be great to have some guest star characters from the rest of the indie community. It’s great for indies to be able to do that. There’s no kind of big barrier, you don’t have to go through seven levels of approval, you just go: yeah, we’re going to do that.”

Shovel Knight’s role in the game is not yet known. Yacht Club Games has taken charge in designing Shovel Knight’s 3D model and voice for the game. The indie developer is also busy at work with Specter of Torment, its latest story DLC for Shovel Knight.

In their post, Playtonic Games also announced Yooka-Laylee is receiving a physical release. Both boxed and digital copies of the game will be ready for release in Q1 2017. Backers of Yooka-Laylee’s Kickstarter campaign will be able to make the switch from digital to physical.

Yooka-Laylee hit Kickstarter last May. The campaign raised $1 million in just under six hours, the fastest ever at that time. With 73,206 backers, the “Rare-vival” raised over $2.5 million in less than two months.

Made-up of former Rare Ltd. employees, Playtonic Games wants to take gamers back to the world of platformers. With colorful worlds and music influenced by Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie, Yooka-Laylee will take fans on a nostalgic ride.

Yooka-Laylee will be available on Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, and PC in Q1 2017.
