Space Wars: Interstellar Empires is a turn-based tactical strategy MMO where you will join one of four races, each with their own playstyle, and gain access to hundreds of visually-distinct ships. Once you’ve selected your race, you’ll choose a starting ship, spawn point, customize your Captain and command a crew. Conquer galactic territories through combat, complete missions, and use experience to upgrade your crew or acquire more powerful ships in an RPG format.

The Sol Imperial Worlds represent the human race and will have sturdy, well-balanced utilitarian warships with a focus on plasma weaponry and strong force fields. Their technological advantage will also extend to speed, as the Sol’s ion drive technology will surpass the Genari’s fusion drives. Their officers will focus on defensive skills.

The Genari United Empire will lag behind in technology, but have more maneuverable ships with advanced armor. They will also have marine pods, which offset their disadvantage by boarding onto enemy ships and either causing crew casualties or capturing the ship outright. Their officers will focus on offensive skills.

The Ma’Alaketh Confederation will wield technology that’s centuries ahead compared to the Sol and Genari. Little is known about them other than their minimal interest in the conflict between the warring races. They will have more distinct long-ranged weaponry and dampening fields that make them harder to hit. Their officers will focus on technology-based skills.

The Hive will be comprised of living ships, which are sentient creatures that live and die in space. Starting as spores, they will use absorbed energy from solar radiation and organic matter captured from enemy ships to grow into larger forms. Their weaponized nature stems from a need for self defense, causing them to produce lethal weapons that grow off ships. They have no crew but develop and improve through growth and experience.

You will side with one of four races battling to control the galaxy. Select and command a starship and fight alongside your faction to conquer the map one planet at a time. Work with your allies to start friendships and clans or go rogue. Either will lead to tense battles for enemy territory … or to defend your own.

If a location is conquered by an invading force, it will be added to that Empire’s territory. The goal shared by all four races is to successfully overpower the other species and win the server.

You select your ship from a large roster of varied styles and loadouts, and are able to access more powerful ships as you gain experience.

Using that experience, you can choose to get new ships, or upgrade your Captain and Officers.  Each of these officers have unique skill trees that will affect the performance of your ship.

Fights will take place on a 2D hexagonal board. There’s a galaxy map where movement is in real time, but once you enter a region that’s being contested, pacing becomes turn-based.

You start in the Allocation Phase where action points are distributed into powering up weapons, shields, movement, and sensors. As it is a hex-based game, there are six sides from which force fields and weapons can be charged for offensive and defensive purposes. Predicting where an enemy will attack from is crucial to protecting your ship and crew.

Next is the Combat Phase, where you move your ship and try to detect enemies before they spot you. Take advantage of the environment around you by hiding behind asteroids to dodge approaching enemies or plot a sneak attack as they approach. Regions may also have nebulas, ion storms and radiation areas that can affect your gameplay and can be used to your tactical advantage.
