A month from release, The Last Guardian has been delayed again. President of SCE Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, announced the latest delay yesterday on the PlayStation Blog.
Yoshida writes, “The Last Guardian development team is fast approaching major milestones in production and has made the tough decision to delay the release of The Last Guardian a few weeks. A delay is a difficult decision, particularly with this game, but we have encountered more bugs than anticipated while in the final stages of development. To ensure that The Last Guardian delivers on the experience that the game’s creators have envisioned, we need to take the extra time to work on those issues.”
Fans who anticipated getting their hands on the long awaited follow-up to Shadow of the Colossus on October 25, must now wait an additional six weeks. Not too bad considering the game’s path to this point.
The Last Guardian has been through development hell since its announcement at Sony’s 2009 E3 press conference. Beginning development in 2007, it has since been through numerous delays, jumped from PS3 to PS4, and lost numerous key individuals from its developer, Team Ico.
The Last Guardian follows a young boy and a giant-feathered creature named Trico. Together the two attempt to escape the mysterious castle they are imprisoned in, while at the same time evading their captors. Throughout their fight to survive, the two become closer, creating a unique friendship between them. Director, Fumito Ueda, has stated in numerous interviews that the relationship between the boy and Trico would be the major focus of the game experience.
After a shaky decade, The Last Guardian is just around the corner. The release of the long awaited title came closer to reality in June, when retailers started taking preorders for a collector’s edition. With the collector’s edition, players will receive a steel case, a statue of the boy and Trico, a 72-page art book, and a digital download of the soundtrack, all tucked away in a small wooden crate.
Fans can finally get their hands on The Last Guardian on December 6, barring there are no other delays.
