GHOSTBUSTERS is out, people have seen it, and it’s time to look to the future. With the weekend numbers out for the movie said future looks pretty bright now, and though the film was not able to defeat a bunch of animated critters, it was able to rack-up a sweet $46 million. So of course the people over at Sony are pretty happy, and when you’re happy you make a lot of bold decisions, and they’ve made a pretty bold one indeed.
Speaking to The Wrap this weekend, Sony distribution boss Rory Bruer said: “The Ghostbusters world is alive and well. I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise.
“While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind [a sequel] will happen.”
As Bruer’s comments suggest, a direct sequel to Feig’s movie would be only part of an ongoing Ghostbusters franchise. A new animated show has already been announced. Titled Ghostbusters: Ecto Force, it is a futuristic series set in the year 2050 and is set for an early 2018 premiere.
Directed by Paul Feig and starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, “Ghostbusters” is in theaters now.
