I think we can all agree that there has been much controversy lately over the state of current gen systems. With the talk of Playstation Neo, Nintendo NX, and Project Scorpio, everyone is panicking about the state of current consoles. Money in the gaming industry isn’t exactly at an all time high and companies are sneaking in any way that they can get a little extra money.
That is a subject for another time, however I am going to talk about my favorite system of this generation, and why I enjoy it over the other systems. I am going to talk about the system that get’s the most hate. That system is of course the Wii U.
The Wii U has failed in many areas as a product to the consumer. I would say that is mainly because it was unsure of what it was at launch. It tried to Market off of the Wii, it tried to be a new system, it tried to appeal to gamers and to a family audience. The Wii U went in multiple directions at once and ended up nowhere.
I don’t hate any of the current consoles, however in my eyes this generation as a whole has failed. Remember when the Xbox One was going to be a system that didn’t play physical discs? Or when it had to drop support for the Kinect? Or how no system had a interesting game at it’s release? Even now halfway through the life cycle of these systems, companies have to announce that they aren’t making new console’s just so everyone doesn’t abandon ship.
Luckily as a gamer I don’t care about the marketing success, or the specs. I just care about the games. That is where the Wii U shines. It has more exclusive’s than the One and the PS4 combined. Splatoon, Mario Kart, Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros., Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, are just a few examples of games I can’t play anywhere else.
Now yes, I understand that if you aren’t into these titles, the Wii U won’t mean much. It only has a handful of decent 3rd party titles. I’ve played Call of Duty, I’ve played Assassin’s Creed, I’ve played the generic shooters that come rolling out every year. I’ve seen the rise of DLC, and Season Passes, and in-game purchases.
I still do love playing PS4 and XBOX and I doubt I could play nothing but Wii U for more than a week or two. However it’s nice to play with the variety of fun exclusives to even out today’s selection. If you feel the same way I do about current gen systems then I recommend giving Nintendo a chance.
